Describe life in Paris; voyage from Le Havre to New York, 1949; sojourn in New York; journey to California via Panama, 1851; mining in the vicinity of Nevada City; the flood and fire in Sacramento in 1852; his move to San Francisco. Some letters contain pen and ink sketches. With these: two lithographs-goldwashing on the Mokelumne River, and Sacramento City-with explanatoy texts, removed from a book.
